Is this an immersion programme?

No, it is not an immersion programme. Our te reo programme currently consists of 4 courses; Te Hiringa, Te Torohanga, Te Mirimiri and Te Ohomauri, ranging through from pronunciation to making simple conversation. Akonga are able to enter into any course beyond Te Hiringa if they already have the skills necessary to enter at those points.

Whatever tools are necessary to enable akonga to reach the desired goals will be employed, including, if necessary, the English language. However, a diminishing of the use of English in the learning environment as the course progresses remains a fundamental aim, for the 4th course Te Ohomauri - defined by Williams as "beginning to speak".

People need opportunities to learn and practise te reo in everyday situations to re-normalise the use of te reo Māori in the community.
